Illustrations featured in new film "An Oversimplification of Her Beauty" - Screening at 2012 Sundance Film Festival.

A little late in posting this, but my illustrations are going to Sundance! I’ve been working with writer/director Terence Nance on a series of animated illustrations for his first feature film, An Oversimplification of Her Beauty, which was accepted in the New Frontiers category to be screened at the 2012 Sundance Film Festival. It’s been a long journey for him and the community of people involved in creating this film — very excited to see hard work and talent recognized. Check the synopsis and trailer:

“A quixotic young man humorously courses live action and various animated landscapes as he tries to understand himself after a mystery girl stands him up.”

“Stephanie C. Matthews is a New York-based, Washington State-bred artist whose work I’ve been following for a few years now. While her newfound interest in ‘human-engineered environments’ is readily apparent here and much of her other recent work, her relentless love of color appears to have been imbued with delicious, evocative nuance. The artist has also added embroidery to her arsenal, which by extension makes me long for a line of Stephanie Matthews designed textiles.”

"Causing (colorful) rambunction throughout the sphere" - Liberator Magazine interview. August 2011.

“Have you ever seen artwork or design that literally made you gasp out loud? That’s the reaction I had when I first saw Stephanie Matthew’s work on Tumblr, under the name Colorful Rambunction. Matthews is a mixed media artist based in New York City. She was kind enough to grant us an interview where she talks about her inspirations, what motivates her, and future projects!” — Danielle Scruggs, Visual Arts Editor

About:

Colorful Rambunction: The Creative Work of Stephanie C. Matthews

A few moons ago, I left the land of many apples (known to most as Washington State) to experience life the Big Apple. So far it's been a crazy, lovely adventure. I'm grateful.

About the work:
Drawing inspiration from natural and human-engineered environments, my ancestors, dreams, and the collective conscience as it relates to changing media and technology, my work examines the interactions that shape our notions of reality and identity. Vibrant colors and detailed patterns serve as visual metaphors. I create most of my pieces in abstract form to encourage the viewer to find his or her own story within the images.
